Don't blame Constitution for everything, it has kept the country together: Fali Nariman

The Constitution of India has kept the country together despite any shortcomings it may have and it would be incorrect to blame the Constitution for everything that happens in the country, Senior Advocate and eminent jurist Fali Nariman said on Friday..I think we should improve ourselves and not our Constitution, he opined."Don't blame the Constitution for every damn thing that goes on in this country. Please always realise that it has kept the country together whatever shortcomings there may be need to be dealt with. ," he stated.Nariman also underlined that the country might not have a new Constitution ever."I don’t think we will ever have another Constitution because the tolerance level today in all parts of the world is extremely low. The word 'fraternity' which is used in the Constitution is hardly ever mentioned anywhere else. We are not as fraternal as we should. We should, therefore, improve ourselves and not the Constitution," he said.He was taking part in a discussion with journalist and Chief Editor of The Print Shekhar Gupta and Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy's Arghya Sengupta on the latter's book 'The Colonial Constitution'.Nariman also said that the Basic Structure doctrine is an excellent doctrine."Excellent dogma. I can't think of a better dogma than basic structure," he stated..To a question posed by Shekhar Gupta on which parts of the Constitution are outdated, Nariman said,"I don't know. I think this is the only document that keeps our country together.".Gupta further asked what are the aspects of the Constitution that makes the present government uncomfortable.Nariman replied by stating that governments with brute majority in the parliament have always turned autocratic."I think the majoritarian governments just don't work. I am in favour of coalition governments. The same thing happened during emergency with another political party," Nariman opined..However, Nariman did concede that the institution of Governor is colonial and they act as mouthpieces of the Central government."Take the example of governors. Why are they so vocal now? Only because they are minions of the State," he said."Are Governors a colonial institution," Gupta queried."Of course.
