The Delhi High Court yesterday directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to come up with a strategy for dealing with increasing instances of crime against women in the capital region..The direction was given by the Division Bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Sanjeev Sachdeva while hearing a matter on the state of women’s safety post the Nirbhaya gangrape. The Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the same..Advocate Meera Bhatia, who is the amicus curiae in the matter, informed the Court that the Police is completely aware of the profiles of offenders and is also cognizant with the types of crimes taking place against women..Chairperson for the Delhi Commission for Women Swati Maliwal broke down while informing the Court about recent incidents wherein minor girls were raped. She also stated that on an average, three women are raped every day..Appearing for the Centre, ASG Sanjay Jain stated that the earlier order of the Court with regard to recruitment in the Delhi Police had been communicated to the Ministries of Home Affairs and Finance for compliance..The Bench observed that nothing concrete has been done in the last three years to bring down the rate of crimes against women. It directed that the Commissioner or any officer similar to his rank such as the Special Commissioner of Police or the Joint Commissioner be present during the next hearing on December 11.
