The Central government on Friday introduced the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill of 2022 in the Lok Sabha. .The Union Cabinet had on Tuesday approved the Bill seeking to merge three municipal corporations in the national capital. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi was trifurcated in 2012. The civic polls in Delhi, due in mid-April were deferred by the State Election Commission on account of this bill. The poll panel had during a March 9 press conference said that it had received a letter from Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal that stated the Union government’s intention to go about the civic bodies' merger, as per a report in The Print. The three civic bodies at the present, the North, South and East Delhi Municipal Corporations, are spread across 272 wards with three commissioners, 66 heads of departments, and three mayoral officers.
