The Delhi High Court on Friday rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) petition challenging the appointment of Supreme Court judge Justice DY Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India (CJI)..A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad also imposed costs of ₹1 lakh on the petitioner, observing that the petition was not a public interest litigation but was a “publicity oriented” petition. The petition was filed by one Sanjeev Kumar Tiwari, president of an organisation named Gram Uday Foundation.“Present petition has only been filed only to gain publicity without there being any material,” the Court said..Just last week, the Supreme Court had also dismissed a similar plea against appointment of Justice Chandrachud as CJI. .Justice DY Chandrachud was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India on November 9, Wednesday. President of India, Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to him at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 10 AM today.Justice Chandrachud took over from former CJI UU Lalit who retired from office on November 8, Tuesday.
