The Delhi High Court yesterday issued notice to American companies Google LLC, Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc. and others in the suo motu case initiated against several media outlets for disclosing the identity of the Kathua gangrape victim..The Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar had taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and had lambasted the news networks for not following the stated norms with regard to coverage of such incidents..Earlier, the Court had issued notice to the Indian subsidiaries of the said companies for making the victim’s name and picture available on the internet. However, the Indian companies stated that they are not competent to respond to the notice..Last month, the Court had directed various media houses to deposit Rs. 10 lakh each, as penalty for disclosing the name and other details of the Kathua gangrape victim..The Court had also put a prohibition on the media from disclosing the identity of the victim in the future and had appointed Senior Advocate Arvind Nigam as the amicus curiae.
