A Delhi court recently granted bail to Nitin Johri, an accused in the money laundering case associated with the alleged ₹56,000 crore bank loan fraud committed by Bhushan Steel..Johri, the former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Bhushan Steel, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in January 2024. He was later diagnosed with cancer and underwent a surgery. In an order passed on July 12, Special Judge (PC Act) Jagdish Kumar of the Rouse Avenue Court held that Johri falls under the category of sick and infirm. The Court said that given the accused’s health, he may need speedy treatment but the dates given for his tests are taking months..Johri had argued that after the removal of his cancerous kidney, he has only one functional kidney and has developed chronic kidney disease associated with impaired kidney function which adds to his precarious health condition. He added that he was only a salaried employee of Bhushan Steel and not in receipt of any proceeds of crime. The bail plea was opposed by the ED which argued that the second opinion given by AIIMS clearly said that Johri can be treated in the jail hospital. .Senior Advocate Pramod Kumar Dubey appeared for Nitin Johri. .[Read Order]
