Dammalapati Srinivas appointed Advocate General of AP amidst controversy

Senior Advocate Dammalapati Srinivas has been appointed Advocate General for the state of Andhra Pradesh, following the controversial resignation of P Venugopal..The former AG was paid a visit by public prosecutor P Venkateswarlu, who asked the Senior Advocate to demit office. Speaking to Bar & Bench, Venugopal said,.“The public prosecutor came to my office and asked me to resign. That is not the general practice followed.”.According to members of the legal fraternity in the state, the prevailing practice was that the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary or the Law Minister requests the AG to quit the post..News reports suggest that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu effected the change of guard in a bid to revamp the law officers of the state government. To this end, he has replaced Venugopal with Srinivas, who was serving as Additional Advocate General..When contacted, Srinivas confirmed his appointment, but chose not to comment on the issue..Srinvas did his law from VDS Law College in Vijayawada and registered as member of Bar Council of AP. He worked as a junior with current Supreme Court judge Justice NV Ramana before working under Senior Advocate SR Ashok. He has previously standing counsel for the Railways and Municipalities and Panchayat Raj.
