Collegium recommends appointment of Justice Tashi Rabstan as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium on Thursday recommended the appointment of Justice Tashi Rabstan as the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court.

A resolution to this effect was passed by the Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.

Justice Rabstan is to take charge as Chief Justice pursuant to the retirement of present Chief Justice S Vaidyanathan on August 24.

The Collegium said that Justice Rabstan is the senior most judge of the High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh and would be the first Chief Justice from the Ladakh region.

"Bearing in mind that Mr Justice Tashi Rabstan would be the first Chief Justice from the region of Ladakh which has otherwise little or no representation among the Judges of the High Court and no representation at all so far in the office of Chief Justice, the Collegium recommends his appointment as Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalya on the retirement of Mr Justice S Vaidyanathan, Chief Justice of that High Court, who is due to retire on 16 August 2024," the resolution said.

Justice Rabstan was born on April 10, 1963 at Skurbuchan, in Leh Ladakh. He did his graduation and LL.B. from University of Jammu. He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Jammu & Kashmir on March 6, 1990, and started his practice at the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

He was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court in March 2013 and was made a permanent judge in May 2014.

He has also served as the Acting Chief Justice of High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in 2022.
