Clasis Law and Clyde & Co have decided to end their best friend relationship, according to reliable sources..It is understood that the split will be effective from April 1, 2018..We have reached out to Clyde & Co Partners Simon Konsta and Abhimanyu Jalan as well as Clasis Managing Partner Vineet Aneja for comment..Vineet Aneja commented,.“We have had an association with Clyde & Co, which, like any business, we review from time to time, to ensure that it works for both us and our clients. We continue to have a good relationship with Clyde & Co and would continue to work together on a case to case basis.”.This split could be a fall out of the recent foreign law firm judgment (AK Balaji vs. BCI) delivered by the Supreme Court apart from the fact that Clasis has not been able to retain its partners and have seen quite a few exits over the years..The Supreme Court in its judgment had held that the foreign law firms cannot set up offices in India. However, upholding the Madras High Court judgment, the Court allowed foreign lawyers to ‘fly in fly out’ to advise on foreign law but it should be on a temporary casual basis..Clyde & Co had initially entered into a best friend relationship with ALMT Legal in 2009. However, in 2011 five partners across Mumbai, Delhi and London offices of ALMT Legal had left ALMT to start-up a new firm Clasis Law. .This break away had brought the best-friend relationship of ALMT and Clyde & Co. to an end with Clyde retaining their relationship with Clasis Law..In 2013, Clasis co-founder and London Partner Shalini Aggarwal had left the firm to start her own firm, ‘In Se Legal’, in London. Thereafter in 2014 2014, Clasis Law co-founder and London Partner Sakate Khaitan had left the firm to set up ‘Khaitan Legal Associates’..Over the years, quite a few firms who had entered into best friend relationship to take advantage of the anticipated liberalisation of the Indian legal market, have ended their relationships. Trilegal and Allen & Overy ended their referral arrangement in 2012 and before that AZB & Partners and Clifford Chance too had ended it 2011.
