CJ DN Patel agrees to refer incident of chants of shame to a Committee

A day after the Chief Justice's Court erupted in chants of "shame! shame!" during the hearing related to the Jamia protests, Chief Justice DN Patel said that the issue would be referred to a committee.

The statement was made after a group of lawyers appeared before Chief Justice DN Patel seeking initiation of suo motu action against those who chanted in court yesterday.

At the outset, the lawyers, who claimed to be from different courts in the city, stated that they had approached the Court with a “sense of despair and pain”, and tendered their apology.

Senior Advocate Chetan Sharma emphasized that the incident was against the majesty of the Court.

"It has to stop…we may have our emotions and convictions, but this is not the way it is done”, Sharma said, claiming that the conduct was totally unbecoming of the profession.

It was further added that the chants were a clear violation of the "majesty of law”, and that the incident was condemned by the Bar Association and theBar Council. The lawyers thus prayed for initiation of suo motu action to look into the incident and constitute a committee for the same.

It was further suggested that the CCTV cameras in the court room be checked to identify those involved. "They must tender an apology or face action", the lawyers said.

In response, Chief Justice Patel said,

"It will go to the Committee and we will take action."
