Incumbent Chief Justice of India (CJI) Uday Umesh Lalit has recommended the name of Justice DY Chandrachud to take over as the next CJI..CJI Lalit wrote to the Central government in this regard , recommending the name of Justice Chandrachud, who is set to have long tenure of two years at the helm.Earlier today, the incumbent CJI had requested all Supreme Court judges to be present in the judges lounge today by 10.15 am so that the letter recommending Justice DY Chandrachud as the next CJI can be handed over in their presence.The Secretariat of the CJI had received a communication from the Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on October 7 requesting the CJI to recommend the name of his successor.CJI Lalit is slated to demit office on November 8.November 7 will be his last working day on account of it being a public holiday (Guru Nanak jayanti) the next day. Justice Lalit had a very short tenure as CJI having assumed office on August 27 this year, upon the retirement of former CJI NV Ramana.
