The Central government on June 11 cleared the appointment of two additional judges of the Gauhati High Court as permanent judges..The two judges who have been made permanent are:- Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund;- Justice Mitali Thakuria.The Supreme Court collegium had on May 18, recommended that the two additional judges be made permanent..As per the Memorandum of Procedure, judges of the Supreme Court conversant with the affairs of the Gauhati High Court were then consulted to assess the suitability of the candidates.Further, a two-judge committee evaluated the judgments of the two High Court judges, and rated them to be well-reasoned, containing analysis of the facts and backed by appropriate case laws.The Collegium after scrutinising the material on record and the opinion of the consultee judges and the committee, found the candidates fit and suitable for being appointed permanent judges.As on June 1, the Gauhati High Court is functioning with 24 judges as against its sanctioned strength of 30, a vacancy position of 6. .[Read Notification]
