The Central government on Monday notified the transfer of the Calcutta High Court judge Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya to the Telangana High Court..“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Smt. Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya, Judge, Calcutta High Court, as a Judge of Telangana High Court and to direct her to assume charge of her office in the Telangana High Court,” the Department of Justice said in the notification..The Supreme Court Collegium had last month recommended Justice Bhattacharya’s transfer after she had herself made a request for it."By a communication dated 12 February 2024, Ms Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya has sought a transfer from the High Court at Calcutta to any other High Court for personal reasons. The Collegium accedes to the request and resolves to recommend that Ms Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya be transferred, in the interests of the better administration of justice, to the High Court for the State of Telangana," the resolution stated..Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya was born in 1967 and enrolled as an advocate in West Bengal on November 19, 1997. She practised law before the Calcutta High Court as well as the High Courts of Patna, Delhi, and Hyderabad, apart from the Supreme Court. She has appeared before the Company Law Board, the Debt Recovery Tribunal, the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the Copyright Board, the Intellectual Property Appellate Board and the Securities Appellate Tribunal during her years as an advocate. .Her primary areas of practice were civil, company, arbitration and constitutional matters with a specialisation in corporate and intellectual property law matters.She was appointed an additional judge of the Calcutta High Court on September 21, 2017.
