The Central government has notified the appointment of Justice UU Lalit as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI)..Justice Lalit will take over the reins of the Supreme Court after current CJI NV Ramana demits office on August 26. He will have a relatively short tenure as CJI, till November 8 this year..As is custom, earlier this week, incumbent CJI Ramana had recommended the name of Justice Lalit to take over as the next CJI..Confirming his appointment, the Centre issued a notification today stating,"In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 27th August, 2022.".Justice Lalit was born on November 9, 1957 to former judge of the Bombay High Court and now a Senior Advocate, UR Lalit. He enrolled as an advocate in June 1983, and practiced at the Bombay High Court till December 1985. He moved to the national capital in January 1986 and was later designated a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court in April 2004.
