The Central government on Saturday notified the appointment of three judicial officers as additional judges of the Calcutta High Court..The newly appointed judges are: - Ananya Bandyopadhyay; - Rai Chattopadhyay; and - Subhendu Samanta..The Central Government notification reads:"In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint (i) Ms. Ananya Bandyopadhyay, (ii) Smt. Rai Chattopadhyay and (iii) Shri Subhendu Samanta, to be Additional Judges of the Calcutta High Court, in that order of seniority, for a period of two years with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.".The Supreme Court collegium had reiterated its recommendation of the three judicial officers as judges pursuant to a meeting held on November 11, 2021..They were first recommended by the collegium on February 4, 2021..As on May 1, 2022 the Calcutta High Court is working at a strength of 39 as opposed to its sanctioned strength of 72 with 33 vacancies. .[Read Notification]
