The Central government on Monday notified the appointment of Justice DY Chandrachud as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI)..Justice Chandrachud will take over the reins of the Supreme Court after current CJI UU Lalit demits office on November 8, 2022 . He will have a 2 year tenure as Chief Justice of India and will retire on November 10, 2024. As is custom, on October 11, incumbent CJI Lalit had recommended the name of Justice Chandrachud to take over as the next CJI."In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 09th November, 2022," the notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice said..Justice Chandrachud obtained his LLM degree and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD) from Harvard Law School, USA. Before that he completed his BA with Honours in Economics from St Stephen's College, New Delhi and his LLB from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University.He then practiced law before the Supreme Court of India and the Bombay High Court and was designated a Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court in June 1998.He served as the Additional Solicitor General of India from 1998 until his appointment as a Judge of the Bombay High Court in March 2000.
