The Central government on Wednesday notified the appointment of Justice Prasanna B Varale as a judge of the Supreme Court of India..A notification to this effect was released by the President of India on January 24..The Supreme Court Collegium had on January 19 recommended the appointment of Justice Varale as a judge of the Supreme Court of India.Varale is currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. He will now be the third sitting judge of the Supreme Court from the Dalit community besides Justice BR Gavai and Justice CT Ravikumar.He is senior-most High Court Judge belonging to a Scheduled Caste and the only Chief Justice belonging to a Scheduled Caste among the Chief Justices of High Courts across the country.Justice Varale enrolled as an advocate in August 1985 practiced under advocate SN Loya during his initial years. He also served as a lecturer at Ambedkar Law College in Aurangabad till 1992. He was appointed a judge of the Bombay High Court on July 18, 2008. He was elevated as Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka on October 15, 2022.According to the Collegium resolution published on the website of the Supreme Court, Justice Varale is a competent judge with unimpeachable conduct and integrity and has throughout maintained high standard of professional ethics."Before his elevation as a Judge of the High Court, he practised at the Bar for over 23 years in civil, criminal, labour and administrative law matters in District and Sessions Court and in Constitutional matters at the High Court Bench at Aurangabad. Mr Justice Varale stands at Sl. No.6 in the combined all India seniority of High Court judges.
