The Central government on Friday notified the appointment of two advocates as additional judges of the Madras High Court..The two advocates are N Senthilkumar and G Arul Murugan..In a notification issued on Friday, the government said that Senthilkumar and Murugan were being appointed as Additional Judges for a period of two years..“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint S/Shri (i) N. Senthilkumar and (ii) G. Arul Murugan, to be Additional Judges of the Madras High Court for a period of two years, in that order of seniority, with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices,” the notification read..The two names had first been recommended for elevation by the Madras High Court Collegium on August 3, 2022. On July 18 this year, the Supreme Court Collegium passed a resolution saying that the State government as well as the Governor had agreed to their elevation..“The candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste. His appointment as a judge of the High Court will enhance the representation on the Bench to marginalised communities. Having regard to the above factors, the collegium is of the considered opinion that Shri N. Senthilkumar is suitable for elevation to the Madras High Court,” the July resolution had said on the elevation of Senthilkumar.On advocate Murugan’s elevation, the Supreme Court resolution had noted at the time that the lawyer had practiced at the Madras High Court for over 24 years. “The candidate belongs to the OBC category.
