The Central government has asked all States and Union Territories to ban 23 breeds of 'ferocious dogs which are dangerous for human life'..The move follows the Central government assuring the Delhi High Court in December 2023 that it will expeditiously take a decision on the demand for a ban on licences to keep breeds of dogs considered to be dangerous..A communication issued by Dr OP Chaudhary, Joint Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, indicates that in response to numerous representations from citizens, forums and animal welfare organizations, as well as the proceedings in the High Court, an Expert Committee was established. This Committee, chaired by the Animal Husbandry Commissioner and comprising members from various stakeholder organizations and experts, has identified the following dog breeds as ferocious and dangerous to human life:.Pitbull TerrierTosa Inu American Staffordshire Terrier Fila Brasileiro Dogo Argentino American Bulldog Boerboel Kangal Central Asian Shepherd Dog (Ovcharka) Caucasian Shepherd Dog (Ovcharka) South Russian Shepherd Dog (Ovcharka) Tornjak, Sarplaninac Japanese Tosa,Japanese Akita, Mastiffs Rottweiler Terriers Rhodesian Ridgeback Wolf dogs Canario Akbash dog Moscow Guard dog Cane Corso Every dog of the type commonly known as Ban Dog (or Bandog).The Committee has recommended that the listed dog breeds, including cross-breeds, will be prohibited for import, breeding and selling as pet dogs and other purposes. Therefore, it has requested local bodies and the Department of Animal Husbandry to not issue any licenses or permits for sale or breeding of these dog breeds. Keeping of these dog breeds will be banned as well. It has been clarified that such dogs that have already been kept as pets shall be sterilised so that further breeding may not happen.
