The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) held a function yesterday to celebrate and commemorate Constitution Day..The event was presided over by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and was co-chaired by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. The evening even saw brief addresses by Attorney General KK Venugopal and SCBA President Vikas Singh..In his brief and crisp address, CJI Gogoi began by saying that our country has a rich treasure of values which are derived from sources like family, culture, tradition et al and now, also from the Constitution of India. He added,.“In my mind, the cardinal constitutional value is simple – be fair. If one is fair towards others, then it will solve all problems.”.CJI Gogoi also stated that the day-long Constitution Day function was organised by the Supreme Court, and not the government. He made this clarification in reply to SCBA President Vikas Singh, who had congratulated the government for the elaborate celebration function..Stating that as opposed to previous years when multiple functions were held to commemorate Constitution Day, CJI Gogoi spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to communicate to him that this year, the Supreme Court would organize the entire function..Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad praised the country’s Apex Court for its role in upholding the rule of law and always emerging “with flying colours” amidst challenges. Reminiscing the days of the Emergency, Prasad also commended Justice HR Khanna for his dissenting judgment in the ADM Jabalpur case..The institution not only upholds the rights of the people, but also ensures that the people’s trust in the institution is held, Prasad added..AG Venugopal commended the Supreme Court for giving “flesh and blood” to the right guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India, saying that the Court’s interpretation has been that of ensuring that right to life is not of mere animal existence, but of right to life with dignity..In his address, SCBA President Vikas Singh chose to speak about the PIL jurisdiction of the Supreme Court saying that it is inherent for the Supreme Court. Commenting on the roster system, Singh said that PIL matters should not be placed before a single judge, but should be rotated..“PIL jurisdiction should be rotated and should not be with just one Judge so that it ensures that Constitution and the Law of the land are upheld and not the thoughts of just one Judge.”.The function was also attended by Justices Madan B Lokur, Kurian Joseph, and Indu Malhotra..The delivery of addresses was followed by felicitation ceremony for those members of the Bar who have worked for over fifty years, those who have authored books, as well as for those who excelled in the AoR exams.
