Breaking: Fali Nariman to assist Supreme Court in suo motu petition over Sushant Rohilla suicide

In a surprising development, the Supreme Court of India has taken cognisance of the suicide by Amity Law School student Sushant Rohilla. Rohilla, a third-year law student had committed suicide because he was not allowed to sit for the end semester exams due to lack of minimum attendance..The court took up this case based on a letter written by Rohilla’s friend and classmate, Raghav Sharma to the Supreme Court judges. The matter was listed before a Bench of Chief Justice TS Thakur and Justices DY Chandrachud today..The apex court did not issue notice, but did seek the assistance of senior counsel Fali Nariman in the matter. Appearing for Amity Law School, senior counsel Sidharth Luthra said that even if Rohilla had been given the 15% attendance allowed for extra curricular events, the student would still have remained ineligible to sit for the exam..The Bench said that it would like to get the assistance of Fali Nariman while hinting that it wanted to “make corrections to the system”..The court has also arraigned Indraprastha University in the matter, the University to which Amity Law School is affiliated..Rohilla’s suicide on August 10 this year resulted in a series of protests and petitions by Amity Law School students, including a demand for immediate resignation of Director B.P. Singh Sehgal and Dr. Isheeta Rutabhasini. A petition is already pending in Delhi High Court challenging the attendance rules followed by Amity Law School. In fact, this matter is to be heard by the Delhi High Court today.
