Putting intense corridor gossip to rest, the Law Ministry has recently notified the appointment of Manjula Chellur J as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, with effect from August 24 this year..Chellur J, who is currently the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, will now become only the second woman to be the Bombay High Court’s Chief Justice, after Sujata Manohar J way back in 1994..In fact, Chellur J was the first woman Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court; she was transferred to Calcutta from the Kerala High Court, where too she was the Chief Justice..Hailing from Karnataka, Chellur J was born on December 5, 1955, meaning that she will have another sixteen months as Chief Justice in Bombay. She is widely tipped to be in the running for an elevation to the Supreme Court, and it will be interesting to see if this does come through..Of course, the same was said for the recently retired Chief Justice, DH Waghela.
