The Bombay High Court on Friday issued summons to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Narayan Rane on an election petition challenging his win in the Lok Sabha elections from Ratnagiri–Sindhudurg Constituency. .The election petition has been moved by Shiv Sena (Uddhav Faction) candidate Vinayak Raut who has accused Rane of breach of Model Code of Conduct during the campaigning. Justice Sarang Kotwal sought the response from Rane and other respondents after a brief hearing today and listed the matter for consideration on September 12."Issue summons to all respondents in consonance with the rules of RP [Representation of the People] Act," the Court said..It was argued before the Court that a speech had been given in a village that everyone should vote for Rane, otherwise they will not get funds for the Gram Panchayat. The petitioner has prayed that Rane's election be declared void and fresh polls be held. Rane had won the Lok Sabha seat by 47,858 votes against Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Raut. .Raut in the petition filed through advocate Asim Sarode has also alleged that political workers of Rane had actively and openly pressurised voters and lured them by distributing money in exchange for votes."Bribing the voters by a candidate or his agent or by any other person representing the candidate or his election agent amounts to illegality and corruption in the process of election and it is violation of Section 123 of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951, and punishable under the same," Raut has argued.
