The Bombay Bar Association on Thursday organised a condolence meeting in the lawns of Bombay High Court in the memory of late Fali Nariman..The meet was attended by sitting and former judges and senior lawyers of the High Court..High Court Chief Justice (CJ) Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, who spoke on the occasion, said that Nariman can be considered as someone who was a combination of all great and distinguished lawyers and jurists."He was a boon for legal landscape of the country and would be an inspiration for generations. Now that he is no more, the vacuum is hard to fill in, but the least you can do is strive to remember him for what he was and cherish his legacy, that will live on forever," the CJ said. He added Nariman was among the last of distinguished luminaries who will be universally respected for what he was. "With the loss of the great soul, the nation, the legal fraternity, his family and friends would miss him immensely, but he will always be remembered. Nariman's journey ensures that he will never be forgotten," the judge said. .Senior advocates Avinash Rana, Navroz Seervai, Janak Dwarkadas, Darius Khambata and Aspi Chinoy also shared their memories about Nariman. .Rana termed Nariman a good human while Seervai said Nariman had an insatiable quest for perfection. "To delve on Fali merely as lawyer would be a disservice to him for he was a man of great qualities of head and heart," Seervai said. .Khambata highlighted Nariman's fearlessness to speak the truth and how he was a conscience keeper of the Bar and the Supreme Court. "He truly was the conscience keeper of the Bar and of the Supreme Court. He championed causes that were unpopular. He had the roar of a lion as also the heart of the lion," Khambata said. .Chinoy recounted instances which highlighted Nariman's accurate reading of the judges he was to appear before. "What was amazing is his uncanny ability to read a bench! If it was not Fali Nariman, one would think he had a connection with the court," Chinoy said in lighter vein..Dwarkadas spoke about Nariman's tenacity and passion for the profession and recounted Nariman's advice to him."His advice to me was to always pay your taxes and sleep peacefully. He said that do not leave collecting fees to the following year assuming that the tax will reduce. And never refuse a brief before any court, tribunal or administrative authority. The smaller the man, the larger the ego. You will learn," he said.
