A Mumbai court on Monday issued a bailable warrant against Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut after he failed to appear before it in a defamation case filed by Medha Somaiya, wife of Vice President of BJP's Maharashtra unit, Kirit Somaiya..Metropolitan Magistrate PI Mokashi had last month directed Raut to appear before it on July 4 after it found that he prima facie made defamatory statements against Medha Somaiya. In her complaint, Somaiya claimed that Raut made baseless and completely defamatory allegations against her and her husband, accusing them of being involved in a scam worth ₹100 crore in the construction and maintenance of some public toilets under the jurisdiction of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation. She had requested that the court issue a notice to Raut and initiate proceedings against him for defamation under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code. The magistrate ruled that documents and video clips produced on the record show that the accused made defamatory statements against Medha on April 15 and 16, 2022.The matter has now been adjourned to July 18.
