A Jodhpur Court has reportedly convicted self-styled godman Asaram Bapu and two other accused in a 2013 rape case involving a minor victim..The verdict was delivered this morning by Judge Madhusudhan Sharma amidst tight security from inside Jodhpur Central jail. Reports have surfaced that the judge has sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment for his crime..Asaram Bapu was arrested on charges of raping a minor girl in 2013. The offence was said to have taken place in Jodhpur’s Manai village in August 2013..An FIR was initially registered against Asaram on August 20, 2013. He was arrested on the midnight of August 31, 2013 for charges made out under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Juvenile Justice Act (JJ Act) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act..As per the chargeseet, submitted in November 2013, Asaram and the other accused were booked for various offences under the IPC, the JJ Act and the POCSO Act, including trafficking, rape, outraging a woman’s modesty, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation..Following Asaram’s arrest, two women from Surat also filed a complaint, alleging that they were raped by Asaram and his son between 2002 and 2005. The chargesheet in this case was filed in 2014. Trial in this case is yet to be concluded..The criminal trial for the Jodhpur rape case commenced in 2014 and lasted for four years. The final arguments in the matter were completed last March. Over the course of trial, nine witnesses were attacked, of which three witness were killed..The trial court was directed by the Rajasthan High Court to deliver its verdict from within the jail premises to allay safety concerns. In an order passed to this effect, the High Court had cautioned,.“It cannot be said that [Asaram’s] followers will not create hurdle or unhealthy atmosphere which may create not only hardship and inconvenience to the public at large of Jodhpur city but also law and order problem.”.As a precautionary measure, Section 144 of the IPC has also been imposed in Jodhpur until April 30. The Central Ministry for Home Affairs has also recommended that security be tightened in the three states of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana to guard against possible violence by Asaram’s followers.
