Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has moved Bombay High Court seeking permission to be released from jail for a day to cast his vote in the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections. .The plea was filed as an application in the pending bail plea filed by him in a money laundering case.Justice NJ Jamadar will hear the interim application on June 15..Deshmukh had previously sought leave to cast his vote in the Rajya Sabha election which took place on June 10. A Mumbai court had rejected that plea, after which Deshmukh moved the High Court. However, Deshmukh did not press for that plea. Deshmukh has now filed an interim application in a bail plea filed under Section 439 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which is pending before the High Court for hearing. .Deshmukh is the prime accused in the probe initiated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after CBI filed FIR following a court-directed enquiry into allegations of corruption and misuse of his official position.Deshmukh and the others were first arrested by ED in November 2021 for money laundering offences under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).After their arrest, they were sent to ED custody and subsequently, to judicial custody.Deshmukh moved the High Court for default bail after a Special Court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) rejected his default bail application, after which Deshmukh sought regular bail that was also rejected.Later, Deshmukh and other accused was also arrested by the CBI in the first week of April this year.They were in CBI custody till April 16 after which they were remanded to judicial custody.Deshmukh is, therefore, now in the judicial custody of the CBI Court as also the Special Court under the PMLA.
