A public interest litigation (PIL) petition has been filed before the Supreme Court challenging the Constitutional validity of the Agnipath scheme which proposes to induct youth into the army for four years [Manohar Lal Sharma vs Union of India]..The petition filed by advocate ML Sharma has prayed for quashing of the notification dated June 14, 2022, issued by the Ministry of Defence announcing the scheme..The plea said that as per the Agniveer scheme, after 4 years, out of the selected candidates, only 25 percent will be continued in Indian Army while the rest will be retired /denied job in the armed forces. "During 4 year they will be paid salary and perk but after 4 years denied candidate will get no pension etc." it was submitted. The scheme has led to large scale protests across the country, the plea contended.The scheme has been imposed upon the country without the approval of the parliament and without gazette notification, Sharma submitted.
