Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi had yesterday suggested imposing a pre-deposit on corporate entities fighting cases in the Supreme Court..And the Supreme Court did not waste any time in implementing the same. A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur today asked the parties to a case to deposit 50 lakh within 4 weeks..The case is a dispute concerning rights over cricket match information. The parties include Star India, Idea, Akuate Internet and BCCI, among others..When the matter came up for hearing today, Chief Justice Thakur said that the case is a fit one for implementing the Attorney General’s suggestions. He asked the Senior Advocates who were appearing in the case, including Abhishek Manu Singhvi, to suggest an amount which they would be ready to deposit..“Tell us how much you are willing to deposit. It should be ideally 10 times the fees charged by you (Senior Advocates) for one hearing… it should be 1 crore since you take 10 lakh.”.After Singhvi suggested 25 lakh, the Court finally settled for Rs. 50 lakh. The appellant, Star, has to deposit Rs. 50 lakh, while the three respondents combined have to deposit a total of 50 lakhs..The matter will be taken up for final hearing after the deposit is made.
