Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court Gita Mittal has issued directions to reduce waste generation and minimise use of plastic items Delhi courts..Citing concerns of environmental degradation as well as pollution and waste management specifically in Delhi, Mittal J. in an administrative order, has stated that it is imperative that courts in Delhi reduce waste generation..As an immediate measure, a direction has been issued to minimise plastic utilisation, especially single use plastic items including pens and other stationary items. The direction states,.“For the time being, immediate steps to minimise plastic utilisation especially single use plastic items including pens and other stationary items shall be taken forthwith. Steps be taken to replace plastic items in courts. .A direction in this regard shall be issued by Registrar General to District Courts as well as to all branches of Delhi High Court. In case there are stocks available of such items, after their utilization, they shall not be replaced with single use plastic items unless they are irreplaceable.” .Further, a direction has been issued to all district judges to constitute a three-member committee comprising one officer from the Delhi Higher Judicial Service and two from the Delhi Judicial Service, to work on issues relating to the environment..A committee on the same lines has also been constituted for the Delhi High Court.
