The Delhi government on Monday informed the Delhi High Court that a total of 396 toilets have either been constructed or are under construction in the national capital for the use of transgender persons..Delhi government’s Department of Social Welfare filed a status report before the High Court stating that the construction work for 143 toilets is complete, 223 are being built while the work on 30 toilets is yet to start.A Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora was also told that 1,584 toilets meant for the use of persons with disabilities have been designated for the use of trans persons as well..The Delhi government’s reply came in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by one Jasmine Kaur Chhabra seeking direction to the government to make provisions for separate toilets for the transgender persons and people of third gender.The PIL contended that people of the transgender community feel uncomfortable using washrooms that are built for males and females, and that the same was violative of their right to privacy. They are also prone to sexual harassment because of lack of third gender toilets, it was submitted.The petition also stated that there are many transgender persons who have not disclosed their identity due to social stigma, and are deprived of basic health facilities, resulting in their contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and other severe health issues..[Separate toilets for transgender persons] As society becomes more evolved, sensitive people will do it: Delhi High Court.On Monday, the Court took the details furnished by the government on record directed the government to abide by its statement that the construction of toilets will be completed soon.The Bench then closed the petition.
