New Chief Justices appointed to Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, and Gauhati High Courts

Three High Courts to get new Chief Justices as Centre notifies the appointment of Chief Justices for Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, and Gauhati High Courts.

Andhra Pradesh High Court:

Justices Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, who is currently a Judge at the Madhya Pradesh High Court is set to assume charge as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. Justice Maheshwari will be the first Chief Justice of the recently bifurcated Andhra Pradesh High Court. His elevation to this post was proposed by the Supreme Court Collegium in its resolution dated August 22, 2019.

The office of the Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice has been lying vacant since the day of its inception. Following its creation, the High Court has been manned by Acting Chief Justice Chagari Praveen Kumar.

Sikkim High Court:

Justice Arup Kumar Goswami of the Gauhati High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court. He is currently the Acting Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and was proposed to be elevated as Sikkim’s Chief Justice by the Supreme Court Collegium on August 22. The proposal was made in light of the impending retirement of present Chief Justice VK Bist.

Gauhati High Court:

Justice Ajai Lamba who is currently a Judge at the Allahabad High Court sitting at Lucknow Bench will head the Gauhati High Court pursuant to today’s notification. While proposing his elevation as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, the Supreme Court Collegium in its August 22 resolution had taken note that Justice Lamba is presently the senior-most judge originally hailing from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
