Dr. Neeru Chadha has been elected as the judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) becoming the first Indian woman to be elected to ITLOS..Dr. Chadha is also the first woman from India to occupy a top UN position, after Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, who served as the President of the United Nations General Assembly..Dr Chadha, who did her graduation from the University of Michigan and the University of Delhi, joined the Legal and Treaties Division of the Ministry of External Affairs in 1992. She went on to become the first woman chief legal adviser to the Ministry of External Affairs in 2012..She was also India’s lead agent for both the case filed by Italy in the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and at the arbitral tribunal in The Hague, which involved two Italians who were accused of shooting dead two fishermen off the coast of Kerala in 2012..She also represented India in the 2016 ICJ hearings when the Marshall Islands accused India of not taking its disarmament obligations seriously as a nuclear weapons state, reported Quint.
