The Bombay High Court’s Justices Abhay Oka and C.V. Bhadang have imposed a fine of Rs.20,000 each on twelve BJP party workers for erecting illegal hoardings in the city..The court was hearing a petition against the illegal political advertisements placed all over the city..Ashish Shelar, the BJP’s Mumbai unit chief, along with a legislator from the Maharashtra Navanirman Sena have been directed to deposit an amount “consistent with their status“..Although party workers admitted their mistake and apologised, they expressed apprehension about the fine being imposed to which Oka J said-.“We need to send a strong signal to all political parties. A minimum amount of Rs.20,000 must be paid”.They have been directed to file an undertaking stating that no further illegal hoardings will be installed by them..Of the amount collected, Rs.25,000 will be given to the BMC as costs incurred for removing the illegal hoardings. The rest of the money will go to an organization working for the cause of farmers in Vidarbha and Marathwada. Uday Warunjikar, counsel for the petitioners, suggested that the money be given to the NAAM foundation that works for farmers.
