Merger Market 2013 H1: AZB tops the M&A Deal Count while Amarchand tops league table by Deal Value at $6.2 billion

Merger Market has released its latest report for the first half of 2013. As per the Report, Indian M&A deals totaled $10.9 billion with 130 deals for the first half of 2013, the lowest opening half-year since H1 2009, which had 98 deals worth a total of $7.8 billion. The Inbound M&A value has jumped 190.4 per cent from Q1 2013 ($2.3 billion) to $6.8 billion in Q2 2013..Deal Count.AZB & Partners tops the league table with the highest deal count (21 deals) followed by Amarchand Mangaldas (18 deals) and Khaitan & Co and Desai Diwanji tied at number 3 with 16 deals each. Trilegal ranked fifth in the league table with 5 deals..The other firms to make it to the league table by deal count are J.Sagar Associates (9 deals), Tatva Legal (5 deals), Talwar Thakore & Associates (4 deals) and MNK Law Offices (4 deals)..Deal Value.Amarchand Mangaldas leads the league table with deals valued at $6.2 billion with its big ticket transactions followed by Talwar Thakore & Associates at $3.6 billion with just 4 deals..Amarchand Mangaldas was involved in two of the biggest deals in Q2 2013 including the biggest outbound deal with ONGC and Oil India acquiring a 10% stake of Videocon Industries in the Mozambique Region for $ 2.5 billion. The other deal was Apollo Tyres acquisition of Cooper Tire & Rubber for $2.5 billion..In the first half of 2012, Amarchand Mangaldas had topped the Indian M&A league tables (both volume and value) with 19 deals amounting to $13.27 billion..The top deal of the first half of 2013 – Unilever’s acquisition of 14.8% stake in Hindustan Unilever valued at $3.5 bilion took Talwar Thakore & Associates to the number 3 spot in the league table by value..The other two deals that figure in top 5 deals are Mylan’s acquisition of Strides Arcolab, which involved Platinum Partners and DSK Legal, taking them to number 10 and 11 respectively in the league table by value..The other deal to make it to top 5 deals is Qatar Foundation’s acquisition of 5 per cent stake in Bharti Airtel led by S&R Associates..Below are the rankings by value and volume compiled by Merger Market for the first half of 2013 along with top deals of the same time period.
