Supreme Court Lawyers Welfare Trust invites applications for Justice JS Verma Fellowships

The Supreme Court Lawyers Welfare Trust (SCLWT) has launched the Justice JS Verma Fellowship, providing support and resources to young advocates committed to building a career in Supreme Court litigation.

SCLWT was established in 2008 with a substantial corpus from a practicing Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court with the aim of supporting and promoting professional opportunities and welfare programs for lawyers in the Supreme Court of India.

One of the objectives of the Trust is to encourage and promote deserving young advocates who wish to practice in the Supreme Court of India.

The Justice JS Verma Fellowships have been instituted with this objective, and have in the past awarded fellowships to meritorious young advocates.

Previous Chairpersons of the Trust include Justice JS Verma and Justice Mukul Mudgal. The current Chairperson of the Trust is Justice Aftab Alam.

The Trustees are Chander Uday Singh, Mamata Kachwaha, Gopal Sankaranarayanan, Raghenth Basant, Rahul Narayan, Vrinda Bhandari, Pallav Mongia, Adit Subramaniam Pujari, Jaikriti S Jadeja and Nikhil Singhvi.

Fellowship Details

The fellowship provides:

• Monthly Stipend: ₹30,000 for two years.

• One-time Subscriptions: Access to SCCOnline, Bar & Bench, and LiveLaw in the Fellow’s name.

Eligible applicants must be enrolled with any State Bar Council in India, have between 2 to 7 years of court experience (non-litigation practice not considered), and commit to a minimum of two years’ practice at the Supreme Court.

Applicants must submit a CV, a 1000-word essay on a case of interest, and a 300-word statement on why they merit the fellowship.

The final selection includes a shortlisting process and interviews with the Trust’s Chairperson, Justice Aftab Alam, and Trustees in mid-December 2024. Three fellows will be chosen to begin their two-year tenure upon selection.
