In some relief to the Bar Council of India, the Supreme Court today directed Universities not to charge any fees for verification of lawyers..The order was passed by a Bench of Justices PC Ghose and Rohinton Nariman. .Senior Counsel KK Venugopal, appearing for BCI submitted that Universities were demanding Rs. 200 to Rs. 2000 per person for verification of lawyers under the BCI (Certificate of Practice) Rules. .Venugopal said that even if an average of Rs. 1000 is calculated per person, a total amount of around Rs. 60 crore would have to be incurred by the BCI. .“BCI is not in a position to pay Rs. 60 crore”..The Court then proceeded to pass an order directing the Universities to do the verification without charging any fees as of now..The matter has now been listed for hearing on March 21.
