AQUILAW, Trilegal act on Times Group sale of Bengali newspaper 'Ei Samay' to Advocate Sanjay Basu and others

Partner at AQUILAW, Advocate Sanjay Basu and industrialist Anurag Choudhary have acquired Bengali newspaper ‘Ei Samay’ from the Times of India Group by way of slump sale of business.

AQUILAW advised the acquirers. The team consisted of Suhana Islam Murshedd (Partner), Subhashree Pani (Principal Associate), Milind Anand (Associate), Anwesha S Mukherjee (Associate) and Namasvi Karia (Associate).

Trilegal advised Bennett Coleman and Company Limited and Times Internet Limited on this transaction.

Basu has over 25 years of experience in civil litigation, arbitration and criminal law, and is also the Senior Standing Counsel for the State of West Bengal in the Supreme Court of India.

As per a press release,

"The Ei Samay offering first came to Sanjay’s knowledge when Times Group approached him to seek legal representation. However, as the search for the right buyer was in progress, Sanjay and his co- investors realized that they were infact the best fit to take the Ei Samay business forward."
