Recruitment season has been in full swing over the past couple of months, with the top Indian law firms shoring up their work forces with new hires..Back in 2015, we had done a similar report on the number of students of the graduating 2016 batch hired by law firms. In that report, we found that as many as one hundred and sixty nine fresh hires were made during the 2015 season..This year, that number has increased to two hundred and six..We arrived at this figure going by the complete recruitment statistics of eight law firms..We had access to the official recruitment figures of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, Trilegal, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, Luthra & Luthra, AZB & Partners, Khaitan & Co, Talwar Thakore Associates, and S&R Associates. These were cross-checked with the official Day Zero figures of four law schools – NLSIU, NALSAR, NLU J, GNLU and NLU Delhi..A complete analysis follows..Which law firms were most active?.As per our numbers, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas hired most actively, accounting for a third of the total number of hires this year. Far behind CAM’s sixty-five hires is Trilegal with thirty-nine, followed by Khaitan with thirty-four and Shardul Amarchand Mangladas with 26..Luthra & Luthra has made twenty-five hires, while AZB & Partners was comparatively less active, with just eleven hires..On the other end of the spectrum, J Sagar Associates stayed away from campus recruitments altogether, as the firm has decided to recruit freshers from its internship program..How many campus hires? How many PPOs?.Out of a total of one hundred and fifty five hires (excluding Luthra’s and SAM’s hires, as we do not have the breakup for those), ninety were campus hires, whereas sixty-five were pre-placement offers (PPOs)..Some firms like Cyril Amarchand chose to make a majority of their hires through campus hires, with fifty-two campus hires and thirteen PPOs. Other firms like Khaitan chose to rely on the PPO route, hiring twenty-eight students through this mode, as opposed to just six campus hires. Still others like Trilegal opted to strike a balance between the two, with twenty-three campus hires and sixteen PPOs..FirmCampus HiresPPOsTotalCyril Amarchand Mangaldas521365Trilegal231639Khaitan62834Shardul Amarchand MangaldasNANA26Luthra & LuthraNANA25AZB & Partners9211S&R Associates–44Talwar Thakore & Associates–22TOTAL 206.Which law school bagged the most hires?.NUJS Kolkata, whose Recruitment and Placement Committee recently expressed their reluctance to publicize their Day Zero figures, leads the way, with forty placements from these top firms..“Stellar”, indeed..NLSIU Bangalore is second with thirty-three, followed by GNLU Gandhinagar with thirty. NALSAR Hyderabad saw twenty-eight of its 2018 batch students bag jobs from these law firms, as did twenty-three NLU Jodhpur students and twenty NLU Delhi students..Students from only two other NLUs – NLU Odisha and RGNUL Patiala – landed jobs in the top eight firms. Non-NLUs like GLC Mumbai, JGLS Sonepat and ILS Pune fared better in this regard, with five, four and two placements respectively. This gives further fuel to the argument that the NLU-tag is over-rated, especially with regard to the newer national law universities..The other colleges top firms have hired from are Campus Law Centre, Delhi University and Symbiosis Law School, Noida..Here are the 2018 recruitment figures (so far), received from these eight law firms:.CAMTrilegalKhaitanAZBLuthraTTASAMS&RTOTALNUJS164843–5–40NLS47444–9133GNLU1745–1–2130NALSAR84526–3–28NLUJ623–9–3–23NLUD552–222220NLIU665–––––17GLC–4–1––––5JGLS31––––––4ILS11–2NLUO1––1SLS (Noida)1––1CLC1––1RGNUL11
