Justice SA Bobde to be next Chief Justice of India, President signs warrant

The President of India, Ramnath Kovind, has signed the warrant appointing Justice SA Bobde as the next Chief Justice of India.

As per reports, the swearing-in ceremony is likely to be held on November 18.

Justice SA Bobde will be the 47th Chief Justice of India. His term will run until April 23, 2021.

As part of the protocol, the present CJI Ranjan Gogoi, who is set to retire on November 17, had penned a letter to the Central government earlier this month, recommending Justice Bobde’s name for the post.

The son of reputed Senior Advocate Arvind Shriniwas Bobde, Justice Bobde enrolled with the Bar Council of Maharashtra in 1978. He was made Senior Advocate in 1998.

He was elevated as a judge of the Bombay High Court in 2000, and went on to serve as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh from October 2012.

Justice Bobde was elevated to the Supreme Court in April 2013.

On his Collegium, Justice Bobde will have Justices NV RamanaArun Mishra (till 2/9/20), Rohinton Nariman and R Banumathi (till 19/7/20). Justices UU Lalit (from 20/7/20) and AM Khanwilkar (from 3/9/20) will also be part of his Collegium.
