Justice Dipak Misra sworn in as 45th Chief Justice of India

Justice Dipak Misra has been sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of India. His oath was administered today by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Justice Misra will head the Supreme Court collegium also comprising Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan Lokur and Kurian Joseph.

He takes over from outgoing Chief Justice JS Khehar, who retired last week. He is the third judge from the Orissa High Court – after Ranganatha Misra and GB Pattanaik JJ – to become Chief Justice of India.

Justice Misra enrolled as an Advocate on February 14, 1977. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Orissa High Court in 1996 and was transferred to the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 1997. He became a permanent Judge in December, 1997. Justice Misra assumed charge of the office of Chief Justice, Patna High Court in 2009 and later became the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in 2010. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on October 10, 2011.

Justice Misra will have a tenure of nearly 14 months as the CJI. He will retire on October 2, 2018.

During the course of his tenure as a Supreme Court, he has been involved in many decisions that garnered a lot of attention, from the rejection of Yakub Memon’s mercy plea, to the ‘National Anthem order’, to most recently the sentencing of Justice Karnan to six months imprisonment for contempt.
