The Special CBI Court at Patiala House has sent Karti Chidambaram to judicial custody till 24 March in connection with the INX Media corruption case. The Court, however, dismissed Karti’s plea for early hearing of his bail application..The matter came up for hearing today at around 12pm when Karti was presented before the Special CBI judge Sunil Rana, after his three day remand lapsed. The investigation agency did not press for any further police custody, but moved an application for fifteen-day judicial custody of Chidambaram, while Chidambaram moved an application seeking a separate prison cell during this period.Arguing for Karti Chidambaram, Senior Advocate Dayan Krishnan prayed that his client should be provided with proper security if he is being sent to judicial custody.Krishnan alluded to an apprehension that there is a grave threat to the safety and security of Chidambaram in judicial custody and therefore, he should be lodged in separate prison.Dayan Krishnan’s submissions were based on the ground that since Karti’s father P Chidambaram was leading the Ministry of Home Affairs at some point, it is clear that he may have made some enemies.Opposing the security application, the CBI argued that while there may be a threat to P Chidambaram, no threat lies to Karti or his family members, as they continue to travel around the country at free will.Retorting to the CBI counsel’s arguments, Krishnan submitted that the apprehension becomes even more serious with the CBI opposing their security application.“CBI opposing my security application shows that there is a malafide and a political intent. This raises my apprehensions of threat. This shocks my conscience. This is troublesome.”The CBI Judge, after hearing the parties, observed that no separate prison shall be provided to Karti. However, the judge directed Tihar Jail authorities to provide and ensure proper safety and security to Karti during the judicial custody.Judge Rana also allowed Karti to carry his spectacles and medicines as per prescription, subject to the approval of the Jail doctor. The matter will now come up for hearing on 24 March..Read Order
