The Supreme Court has constituted a 3 member committee to review its policy of selection of Law Clerks and Research Assistants (LCRA).

This development was revealed by the advocate appearing before the Delhi High Court in an appeal relating to the selection of law clerks for the Supreme Court.

Currently, only students from a list of empanelled law schools are eligible to apply for the post of LCRA. A Single judge of the HC had in December 2013 struck down this process as unconstitutional in a petition filed by Phaguni Nilesh Lal, a graduate of Army Law Institute, Mohali. The Supreme Court had subsequently chosen to appeal against this decision.

When the matter came up for hearing today before a Division Bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Pradeep Nadrajog, the advocate appearing for the Supreme Court informed the court that the Supreme Court has already constituted a Committee comprising three sitting judges to review the impugned policy. Taking note of the same, the court adjourned the matter to July 7, 2014.
