JGLS holds 2-day conference on emerging trends in competition law Conference held in association with Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation

The Jindal Global Law School, Sonipat (JGLS) and the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO) recently held a two-day conference with a focus on “Competition Law in emerging economies: Trends and Developments in India”. The conference venue was the AALCO office on February 28, 2012 and the JGLS university premises on February 29, 2012 and attended by experts in the field of competition law, lawyers, academics, representatives from law firms and JGLS students..The first day saw Dr. M. Veerappa Moily, Union Minister of Corporate Affairs (pictured below), deliver the presidential address. As per the press release, Moily argued that the competition policy has important linkages with other governmental policies such as fiscal policy, trade policy, labour policy, consumer policy, environmental policy etc. Moily further stated that the government is in the process of releasing a “National Competition Policy” which would “unleash the fullest growth potential of our economy”..Dhanendra Kumar, former Chairman of the Competition Commission of India stated that competition policy is poised to become a critical component of the overall economic policy while JGLS Dean Dr. C. Raj Kumar observed that “….academic institutions have a major role in conducting research and explorative work in this area in helping emerging and developing economies choose the appropriate regime and framework.” Dr. Rahmat Mohamad, AALCO’s Secretary-General stated that there was a pressing need for greater cooperation between international antitrust or competition law enforcement agencies..The two-day affair saw a number of sessions being held, including decisions on cartels and other anticompetitive agreements, different perspectives on sector regulation and merger control regulation in the country. Speakers at the sessions included Suhail Nathani, Co-founder Partner of ELP, Dr. Aditya Bhattacharjea, Professor at Delhi School of Economics, Senior Advocate O.P. Vaish and Charles Maddox, Assistant Professor at JGLS.
