Justice Jasti Chelameswar of Supreme Court is continuing his firm stand against the Collegium system by refraining from attending the meetings of the Collegium..This was reported by APN News which tweeted that Chelameswar J. skipped the Collegium meeting today, the second such meeting that he has boycotted after Justice JS Khehar took over as the Chief Justice of India..Justice Chelameswar had first boycotted the Collegium in September last year when he had written a three-page letter to the Chief Justice expressing his unwillingness to participate in the Collegium process..The continuing rift in the Collegium also seems to have affected appointments to Supreme Court which is currently functioning with 23 judges as against the sanctioned strength of 31..Besides, the rift within the Collegium, the Supreme Court is also engaged in a battle with the Central government over judicial appointment often leading to unpleasant within the court room between the CJI and Attorney General..In a PIL praying for expediting appointment of High Court judges, the Supreme Court had cautioned the central government that it would summon the Secretary from Prime Minister’s office and also threatened to withdraw judicial work from two High Court judges – Justice Valmiki Mehta of Delhi High Court and Justice MR Shah of Gujarat High Court..The difference within the Collegium seems to be only adding to the delay in appointing judges.
