Today, the Delhi High Court’s room no. 2 witnessed the continuation of the verbal duel between Senior Advocate Ram Jethmalani and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the defamation case filed by the latter against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal..Ram Jethmalani, who represented Kejriwal in his cross examination today, questioned Jaitley regarding the funding for the construction of the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi..Jethmalani stated that various public figures and the Central Government had made proposals for funding the construction of the stadium in return for naming the stadium after a specific individual. However, these proposals were not seriously considered by DDCA..The veteran senior counsel alleged that Jaitley imposed his decision of not accepting donations from such public figures or the Government as he did not want any interference in the way the money was to be spent..However, the Finance Minister retorted by saying that the proposals mentioned were tentative and temporary and none of them were backed by definitive written submissions..Jaitley also clarified that DDCA adopted an alternative model wherein the resources for the construction of the stadium were raised by DDCA itself. This model was subsequently followed by the other Cricket Associations of the country..A verbal altercation also broke out between Jethmalani and counsels of Jaitley, after the nonagenarian mentioned an article wherein he had criticized Jaitley and accused him of being embroiled in corruption..Jethmalani also taunted Jaitley by saying that the Prime Minister would be his best character witness and asked whether he intends to bring Narendra Modi to the court to support his contentions..The cross examination will continue on May 17..In 2015, Kejriwal and some other AAP leaders had alleged administrative irregularities and mishandling of finances of DDCA by Jaitley during his tenure as President of the cricket body.
