INX Media: CBI Court extends P Chidambaram’s judicial custody in ED case till December 11

The Special CBI Court at Rouse Avenue Court Complex today extended the judicial custody of P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case till December 11..P Chidambaram was produced before CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar after the expiry of his judicial custody..On the last date of hearing, the Court had allowed the Enforcement Directorate to interrogate P Chidambaram on November 22 and 23..The INX Media case pertains to the alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board clearance to INX Media at the time when P Chidambaram was the Finance Minister. It is the case of the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that P Chidambaram and his son Karti had received illegal gratification from INX Media owners Peter and Indrani Mukherjea for the clearance..The CBI had arrested P Chidambaram on August 21 after his anticipatory bail plea in the case was rejected by the High Court..Chidambaram, who spent a fortnight in police custody after his arrest, was thereafter remanded to judicial custody..Chidambaram was arrested by the ED on October 16 and subsequently sent to ED custody..After the completion of 15 days of ED custody, he was sent to judicial custody on October 30..Earlier this month, the Delhi High Court rejected Chidamabaram’s bail plea on the ground that he played a “key and active role” in the commission of the offence money laundering..An appeal against the dismissal is currently pending before the Supreme Court. Senior Counsel Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued for Chidambaram’s bail before the Bench of Justices R Banumathi, AS Bopanna and Hrishikesh Roy today. The ED will make its submissions tomorrow..The former Union Minister was granted regular bail in the CBI case by the Supreme Court earlier this month. The CBI had subsequently filed a review petition before the Supreme Court against the order granting bail to Chidambaram..Read the Order:
