The Supreme Court today issued notice to Vijay Mallya in a petition filed by a consortium of banks seeking the freezing of Mallya’s passport. Justices Kurian Joseph and Rohinton Nariman heard Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi before issuing notice to Mallya..After Rohatgi submitted that Mallya has left India for the United Kingdom, in all likelihood, notice will also be served through Indian High Commissioner at London besides Mallya’s official Rajya Sabha email address..The court was hearing a petition which not only sought the overturning of a Karnataka High Court’s decision, but the impounding of Mallya’s passport as an interim relief..The matter was listed as item 5 today but the AG sought the indulgence of the court and asked that the matter be taken up at 2 pm since he would have to appear in another case relating to government advertisements. When the matter was taken up at 2 pm, the AG submitted that he spoke to the CBI and Mallya is likely to have left the country..“This gentlemen has been saying ‘I will settle, I will settle'”…I spoke to the CBI. He has left the country in all likelihood”..Rohatgi also submitted that Mallya’s oversees assets were far in excess of his dues to the banks..“Your lordships should summon him and he should be asked to bring his passport.”.The Court issued notice to Mallya and posted the matter for March 30.
