Give law a try, it usually has something for everyone – In Conversation with NLU D gold medalist, Arushi Goel

Arushi Goel was awarded eight gold medals in the recently held convocation at National Law University Delhi. In this e-mail interview with Bar & Bench, she talks about her decision to join the relatively new university, what kept her driven through the five years, and why the study of law is usually a good idea..Bar & Bench: Eight gold medals. There must have been several proud moments during the convocation no?.Arushi Goel: There were, yes. Unfortunately I could not attend the convocation. My parents were however present and they received the degree and the medals on my behalf. I found out about it only after the ceremony was over, through family and friends. So, yes, it was a very happy and proud moment..B&B: What would you say kept you driven through the five years?.AG: Lots of factors. My family has always been a great source of support and motivation, which is what has kept me driven through these years. I also had the opportunity to be mentored by some absolutely amazing teachers, both inside and outside the classroom. In hindsight, I realized that what helped was performing my tasks to the best of my abilities without dwelling too much on the consequences. It has proven to be a good starting point..B&B: Best memories of law school?.AG: Well, there have been many and it would be hard to point out anything specific. Right from learning and unlearning new things, to meeting some exceptional friends, who mentored and molded me along the way, it was great..B&B: Looking back, is there anything that you wish you had done in the five years that you did not do?.AG: Actually, I am sure there are many things that I did not do but the good bit is that everything I have done to date has been a learning experience. I am fairly happy with the way things panned out..B&B: Why did you choose NLU Delhi? It was barely a few years old when you joined it..AG: To be honest, it was close to home and I didn’t want to be a flight ride away five years ago! Apart from that, the very fact that “it was barely a few years old,” and being headed by a reputed administrator, and also located in the capital city (the oft-quoted locational advantage), made the decision much easier..B&B: Lastly, any suggestions for those who are considering studying law?.AG: Law is extremely enriching, stimulating, and not as tough as many might like to believe (although it can be intensive at times)..As a career option, it opens up a myriad of opportunities. From what I have observed in the past few years, my contemporaries have successfully dabbled in all sorts of things, ranging from core legal professions to the not so core areas, with the exception of perhaps more technical areas which would, of course, require specialized study..So, if someone is confused about whether to study law or not and do not have any other better option, I would say give law a genuine try. It usually has something for everyone!
