As the lockdown in the region continues, the Supreme Court today allowed Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to travel to Jammu & Kashmir..The Bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices SA Bobde and S Abdul Nazeer allowed Azad to visit the four districts of Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla and Jammu to interact with the people..Represented by Senior Counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Ghulam Nabi Azad told the Court that he only wishes to interact with daily wagers and others whose livelihoods have been affected by the restrictions imposed in the region. He also gave an undertaking that he will not indulge in any political activities during his visit..The Court, while issuing notice in the matter, permitted the senior Congress leader to visit Jammu & Kashmir..Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad had moved the Supreme Court seeking permission to visit his family and relatives in Kashmir. Azad was earlier prevented from entering Kashmir and was sent back to Delhi from Srinagar airport when he had attempted to visit his family in the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370..Azad thus filed a writ petition seeking directions from the Supreme Court to enable him to enter the Kashmir valley and visit his relatives..A similar petition was earlier filed by PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti‘s daughter Iltija, who had sought the Supreme Court’s intervention to facilitate her travel to Srinagar in order to meet with her mother, who is under detention since August 5.
